The Purrfect Rescue ~ Part One

My daughter became an animal lover the first day we brought her home. As Ms. Piggy our cat sauntered up to inspect the new creature laying on the floor my husband and I held our breath waiting to see how they  reacted to each other. Much to our relief our two month old baby squealed with joy and reached for her kitty that did not run away. They became good buddies in fact when she was only five months old her first words were "kitty cat"!

A few years later when Ms. Piggy went to cat heaven a golden retriever puppy named Izzy joined the family and became my daughter’s best friend. Through the years we also welcomed hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, frogs, hermit crabs and another cat into our home. One evening when my daughter was practicing for her license she thought a raccoon was hit and became hysterical. We had to drive back and forth along that dark road and return again the next morning to assure her it wasn't laying dead in a ditch. Good heavens, just the other day she stopped the car to allow a squirrel to cross the road!

So, it was only natural my daughter got involved after learning our neighbors found six motherless kittens in their boat. The babies were so tiny their eyes still hadn't opened.

These neighbors are nice but caring for cats and dogs is not one of their strengths. The average person would monitor the kittens but leave them undisturbed and wait to see if mom returned. Nope, they took the week old kittens inside the house and played with them for about 9 hours but during that time the babies were never fed.

When it started to get dark outside it was decided the starving kittens should be returned to the boat in case mom returned. We live in a semi rural area and the temperature was predicted to be around freezing that night. It's not unusual to see foxes, coyotes and hawks around our sub division so the chances of the kittens surviving the night were slim to none. They needed help and they needed it now!

To be continued...
